Most days I write in silence, the only sound the tapping of my fingers on the keyboard or the pen scrawling on the blank page. But with NaNoWriMo here and already kicking my butt, I like to turn to a handy writing playlist to get the inspiration flowing.

My usual go-to when it comes to writing music is anything Studio Ghibli. I love the nostalgia I get from listening to it, and thanks to YouTube, there are so many different arrangements available to listen to. If I’m feeling a more relaxing vibe, I would turn on some jazzy Ghibli, or if I wanted something more emotional to envoke some tears for a serious scene, I would turn on a piano version of the soundtrack, or something a bit more emotional. It’s something about those nostalgic melodies and harmonies that always get me in the writing mood.

Sometimes I just don’t want to write at all, and that’s OK too. I’ve got music for that as well. Whenever I just want to belt out some off-key notes by myself with Lily, I’ll turn on ABBA and have my own little dance party. It may sound ridiculous, but it really helps me to unwind, and with the time away I have found some newfound inspiration for my writing.

Then there are the moments when I have no idea what to write about. That’s when I pull up the songs that I am currently obsessed with and imagine the story that goes along with it. I’ll build backstories for the characters involved and just take those 3-4 minutes to imagine the emotions that the characters are feeling and the conflicts that they are facing. It helps me get the creative juices flowing, and once they start flowing it isn’t long before I’m back on track with whatever project I’m working on.

So, in conclusion, I need to give a big thank you to music for always helping me out when I need an extra hand. They have never let me down, and I don’t think they will anytime soon.

I apologize for this post being so short. I’ve got a lot on my plate at the moment and I’m working on taking care of myself more instead of being the workaholic that I tend to be. Also, I think I’ve narrowed down the niche for this blog, so don’t be surprised when things are changed on here. (You can look forward to the announcement for that in 2019).

How do you incorporate music into your writing routine? I would love to hear about it!
