It’s been a while since I last talked about this endeavor, and I feel that you guys deserve an update on how things are going. The first few weeks were magical, and now and then I do have a day where the writing is particularly amazing, but most days after that last update I have just been writing to get the words down for the first draft.

I would also like to update you and mention that I recently purchased a Smith Corona Sterling typewriter with the tag still on the case. The new ink ribbon is arriving soon and once I get that it will be ready to use in no time. With that in mind, I have decided to add a little something else to this little challenge of mine: I will be writing the second draft on the typewriter.

The idea fills me with excitement and I think it will mix things up in my writing process, which will hopefully envoke some more interesting bits for the story. Once the second draft is done on the typewriter I will rewrite it all onto my computer so that I may one day get it published after some more revising sessions.

Anyways! On to the update for this little journey!

Hand Cramps

I’m sure this one is no surprise to everyone and spoiler alert: I don’t write the proper way. I have just never been able to do it no matter how hard I try.

So if you have the same problem, here are some of the tricks that I use to help:

  • Take a short break (I feel like this one is obvious).
  • Massage your wrist until it loosens up.
  • Use a heat wrap (Or run your wrist under hot water).
  • Drink water. Cramping could also be caused by dehydration.

Those usually help prevent anything severe, but it also does help to just take a day to not write. Unless there is an insanely good idea or scene that you just have to write down. In that case, go for it.

Writer’s Block

This is probably not that surprising as well. It’s easy to burn out when you write every day so in order to combat writer’s block, I have a few things that work for me. They help me get the writing juices flowing so I can make regular progress on my story. I’ve made a short list of what I do, but I go into greater detail in this post.

  • Take a break (It’s kind of my solution to a lot of things).
  • Take a walk.
  • Read.
  • Freewrite some poetry or some random prose.
  • Watch a movie/TV show.
  • Simply move on to the next part of the story.

Those are just two new things that I have encountered during this adventure. I’m sure there will be more things to talk about along the way. Who knows, maybe I’ll have a little bit of information on my story to share with you in the next update.

  1. Awesome project! I’m starting working on one this way myself (still in the outlining stages), and it’s great to know I’m not the only one! I’m cheering for you, and looking forward to reading the day when you’ll tell us you’ve finished your first draft! 🙂
